Living in Escondido: More Space, Local Flavor and Room to Grow

by Michelle Dwinell

Escondido gives you more home and more land for your money than most of coastal San Diego. It's a real city with its own arts scene, a historic downtown and plenty of open space in the surrounding hills.

What makes Escondido special

Grand Avenue anchors a historic downtown with restaurants, antique shops and Friday-night car shows in season. The California Center for the Arts hosts concerts and theater, and Grape Day Park celebrates the city's early history. Just east of town, the San Diego Zoo Safari Park draws visitors from around the world, while Stone Brewing's World Bistro and Gardens is a local favorite.

Outdoors close to home

Daley Ranch offers thousands of acres of hiking and biking trails. Lake Dixon and Lake Wohlford are popular for fishing and picnics, and the Escondido Creek Trail runs right through town.

Neighborhoods to know

  • Old Escondido for historic Victorians and Craftsman homes near downtown.
  • The Hidden Meadows and Jesmond Dene areas for larger lots and rural views.
  • San Pasqual Valley and southwest Escondido for agricultural land and acreage properties.
