Living in Rancho Bernardo: Golf, Lakes and Easy Living in North San Diego

by Michelle Dwinell

Rancho Bernardo is a well-established community in the City of San Diego, known for tidy neighborhoods, mature trees and a relaxed, resort-like feel. It appeals to families, professionals and retirees alike.

What makes Rancho Bernardo special

The Rancho Bernardo Inn, with its championship golf course and spa, sets the tone for the area. Bernardo Winery, one of the oldest operating wineries in Southern California, hosts weekend markets and events. Several other golf courses are spread throughout the community.

Outdoors close to home

Lake Hodges and the San Dieguito River Park offer miles of trails, and Bernardo Mountain is a favorite hike with lake views from the top. Neighborhood parks and community pools are common across RB.

Neighborhoods to know

  • Westwood and Bernardo Heights for family-friendly single-family homes.
  • Seven Oaks, Oaks North and Casa de las Campanas for well-known 55+ and senior living options.
  • The Trails and the hillside areas for larger, view-oriented homes.

Schools and commuting

Most of Rancho Bernardo is served by Poway Unified, including Rancho Bernardo High School. Interstate 15 runs through the middle of the community, making commutes north or south straightforward.
